FAQ and further info about our naturopathic tea

Naturopathic teas are functionally formulated blends designed to support specific health outcomes like digestion, sleep, stress, immunity or detoxification. Herbs are selected for their therapeutic actions and combined in meaningful proportions rather than for flavour alone. All blends are crafted by the founder of Organic Merchant, Chalimah Jeanne, a qualified naturopath and herbalist.

The difference is intent. A commercial herbal tea is usually built around flavour, and the quantity of any active herb is often small. A naturopathic blend starts from a desired action and works backwards to the herbs and ratios that deliver it. Naturopathic blends are also loose leaf rather than bagged, using cut herb rather than dust, which preserves more of the volatile oils lost when herb is ground fine.

No, they are different modalities. Homeopathy uses extremely dilute preparations based on the principle of like treating like. Naturopathic herbal tea is a water infusion of whole dried plant material, where the plant’s own constituents pass into the water and are consumed directly. Herbal medicine is one of several modalities a naturopath draws on, alongside nutrition and lifestyle advice.

Herbs are combined for synergy and for balance. Some pairings amplify each other’s effect, others moderate it, so a strong-acting herb is buffered by a gentler one. Our Digestive Tea, for example, pairs bitter herbs that stimulate digestive enzymes and bile with carminatives that ease wind and cramping. Please refer to the individual product pages to read how the ingredients in each blend work together.

Choose the outcome you most want support with, and start with one blend rather than several. For sleep, our calming Restful Tea. For digestion, our soothing Digestive Tea. For daytime energy, our uplifting Energy Tea. You can also book a consultation session with our naturopath to tailor a plan for you.

Use roughly one heaped teaspoon of loose leaf per cup in an infuser, strainer or teapot. Steep time and water temperature vary by blend and are listed on each product page. Cover the cup or pot while it steeps, as much of a blend’s activity sits in volatile aromatic oils that otherwise escape with the steam. Most of our blends can be re-steeped a second time.

Most of our blends are gentle enough for daily use and many are designed for it. Some herbs suit shorter courses better than indefinite daily use, for example our Essiac Tea. Any blend made much stronger than directed can cause digestive upset. Follow the serving guidance on the product page, and if you plan to drink a blend daily over months rather than weeks, please raise it with a qualified practitioner.

While most of our ingredients are gentle, interactions can occur. Some herbs may affect blood clotting, which can be relevant if you take blood thinning medication. Others may influence blood pressure, blood sugar, sedation or the liver enzymes involved in metabolising prescription drugs. Because this varies by herb, by dose and by individual, we cannot advise on it. Please check with a qualified healthcare provider if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, taking medication or due for surgery. Every ingredient in every blend is listed in full on its product page, so take that list with you.

Some herbs that are safe otherwise are not recommended in pregnancy, particularly in the first trimester. We have a dedicated Pregnancy + Nursing collection formulated with this in mind. Please check with your midwife, obstetrician or a qualified herbalist before starting any herbal tea.

Yes, many customers enjoy different blends throughout the day. For example, our uplifting Energy Tea in the morning and our calming Restful Tea before sleep in the evening. If you have any concerns please consult your healthcare practitioner or feel free to contact us with your questions.

Some people feel results within days, especially with sleep or digestion blends. Adaptogens, nutritive tonics and hormonal blends work more gradually and are generally used consistently over several weeks. Herbal medicine tends to build rather than switch on, so consistency matters more than quantity. You can also book a consultation session with our naturopath to tailor a plan for you.

No. While they can support wellness and complement other treatments, our naturopathic teas are not intended to diagnose or cure disease. They are not a substitute. Always consult your healthcare practitioner for medical concerns. Please refer to the individual product pages to read about the potential benefits associated with the herbs in each blend and how the ingredients work together to naturally support you.
