What detoxification actually means
Your body already has a detoxification system, and it is very good at its job. The liver processes and neutralises compounds, the kidneys filter and excrete them, the gut moves waste out, and the skin and lymphatic system play their part. No tea, powder or bath salt replaces any of that. What these products can traditionally do is support the systems already doing the work, which is a smaller and more honest claim than the one usually made for this category.
Three ways to support the process
Tea. The herbs here are bitters, nutritives and gentle diuretics. Dandelion and chicory are classic bitter herbs, traditionally used to stimulate digestive secretions and support liver function. Nettle is a nutritive herb rich in minerals. Ginger and mint are warming carminatives. Our Cleansing Tea is the everyday option, and Essiac Tea is a traditional four-herb decoction formulated by Canadian nurse Rene Caisse in the 1920s.
Cacao. Shine Dust combines raw cacao with triphala, chicory and dandelion, the same family of bitter herbs, in a form you drink as a warm chocolate rather than a tea. It sits across both this collection and our Skin + Complexion range, and you can find the rest of the range in all of our organic cacao blends.
Bath. Skin does not excrete toxins, whatever the marketing says. What a mineral soak does do is exfoliate, soften and refine the skin, ease muscular tension, and give you twenty uninterrupted minutes. Our Sel de Mer Purifying Bath Soak is a thalassotherapy blend of exfoliating marine minerals, deep sea kelp and blue-green algae built for exactly that.
What we do not use
We do not use senna, cascara, or any stimulant laxative herb in any Organic Merchant product. Those are the ingredients behind most commercial "teatox" programmes, and they work by irritating the bowel rather than by supporting anything. The rapid weight change people report is fluid and bowel content, not fat, and it returns as soon as the product stops. Our blends are formulated to be gentle enough for regular use, which is only possible because they are built the other way around.
FAQ and further info about our detoxification range
It depends entirely on what you mean. If you mean the tea removes toxins from your body, no. Your liver and kidneys do that, continuously, whether or not you drink anything. If you mean that bitter and nutritive herbs have a long traditional use in supporting digestion, liver function and healthy elimination, and that a warm daily infusion improves hydration and encourages you to slow down, then yes. We have written this collection to the second definition.
No. No Organic Merchant blend contains senna, cascara sagrada, or any other stimulant laxative. Every ingredient in every product is listed in full on its product page.
Not in the way the category usually promises. Products that produce fast results in this space almost always work as laxatives or diuretics, and what changes is fluid and bowel content rather than body fat. It comes back. Swapping a sweetened drink for a herbal infusion may modestly reduce your sugar intake, and staying hydrated helps in general, but nothing here is a weight loss method. For guidance on your own situation, speak with your healthcare professional or a qualified dietitian.
There is no programme here, and we do not sell one. These are foods and bath products rather than a course of treatment, so use them as part of your normal routine for as long as you enjoy them. If you would prefer a structured plan built around your own circumstances, our naturopath offers consultations for exactly that.
Bitter herbs are traditionally taken before or with meals, because bitterness on the tongue is what triggers the digestive response. So a cup fifteen minutes before eating suits Cleansing Tea well. Beyond that, timing matters less than consistency, and the teas here are caffeine free so none of them will interfere with your evening.
Because there is nothing laxative in them, these blends are gentler than most products sold under this heading. Bitter herbs can still feel like a lot if your digestion is reactive, so start with a weaker cup. If gut comfort is your main concern rather than elimination, our Digestive Health collection is formulated for that specifically, and worth a conversation with your healthcare professional if symptoms are ongoing.
