What tea is good for digestion?
Our Digestive Tea has traditional benefits and plant compounds that are adaptogenic, anti-inflammatory, anti-cramping and calmative, which may naturally soothe indigestion, reflux, bloating, cramping, colic and wind. If you would like to explore the range more thoroughly, our Gut Health Tea Pack brings four blends together, and we have written in depth about the best tea for IBS, diarrhea and constipation.
How herbs support digestion
Herbalists divide digestive herbs into a few working groups, and most of our blends combine two or three of them. Bitters such as dandelion and liquorice root work before food, because bitterness on the tongue triggers the release of digestive enzymes and bile. Carminatives such as fennel, peppermint, cardamom and ginger work after food, relaxing the gut wall to ease trapped wind and cramping. Demulcents coat and soothe irritated tissue. Calmatives such as chamomile work on the gut-brain connection, which matters more than most people realise, since a tense mind and a tense gut usually arrive together.
Beyond tea, our Soothe Dust combines raw cacao with turmeric, ginger and black pepper. The black pepper is there for a reason: piperine is traditionally used alongside turmeric to support its absorption.
FAQ and further info about digestive health tea
Carminative herbs are the traditional answer, because they work on trapped wind rather than on digestion in general. Pure Peppermint Tea is the simplest option, and our Digestive Tea combines several of them with chamomile and a liquorice base. Both are best taken after eating rather than before.
It depends on which herbs are in the cup. Bitter blends work before food, ideally around fifteen minutes ahead, because the bitterness is the trigger. Carminative blends work after food, once the discomfort has arrived. Our Cleansing Tea sits in the first group and Digestive Tea in the second.
They work at different ends of the meal. Bitters stimulate: the taste of bitterness prompts the body to produce more digestive enzymes and bile, so food is broken down more completely from the outset. Carminatives relax: they ease the smooth muscle of the gut wall so trapped gas can move, which is why they help with cramping and bloating after eating. A well-built digestive blend usually contains both.
Yes, and it runs in both directions. The gut has its own extensive nervous system, which is why stress shows up as a churning stomach and why digestive discomfort makes people feel anxious. This is why chamomile appears in both our digestive and our calming blends, and why treating the two as separate problems often does not work. Our Relaxation + Sleep collection approaches it from the other side.
Peppermint is the herb with the longest history of use for IBS symptoms, and it appears in several of our blends. Because IBS is highly individual and triggers vary between people, what helps one person can aggravate another, which is why our Gut Health Tea Pack includes four different blends rather than one. We have written about this in detail in our guide to the best tea for IBS, diarrhea and constipation. If your symptoms are persistent or new, please see your healthcare professional, as IBS is a diagnosis of exclusion.
Turmeric has a long traditional use in supporting the digestive system and easing inflammation, and it is the base of both our Golden Turmeric Tea and our Soothe Dust cacao. Both pair it with black pepper, which is the traditional preparation, since piperine supports the absorption of curcumin.
Yes. These are foods rather than a course of treatment, and most people find a digestive blend becomes a habit around meals rather than something they reach for only when uncomfortable. If you would prefer a plan built around your own symptoms, our naturopath offers consultations.
