Benefits of organic green tea

Green tea is made from unoxidised leaves and is one of the least processed types of tea. This classic tea has traditional benefits and plant compounds that are antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-ageing and cardio protective, which may naturally reduce oxidation, support heart health, aid digestion, support metabolism, enhance cognition and defend against signs of ageing.

Because the leaves are heated soon after harvesting rather than left to oxidise, green tea retains more of its catechins than black tea does. It also contains L-theanine, an amino acid that pairs with green tea's modest caffeine content to give a steady, clear-headed lift rather than the sharp rise and fall of coffee. Please refer to the individual product pages to read about the benefits associated with the ingredients of each blend.

FAQ and further info about our organic green tea 🍵

We offer premium loose leaf organic green teas, including pure single origin varieties and naturally flavoured blends. Our Sencha Green Tea is a pure Japanese-style sencha. Our Jasmine Green Tea combines jasmine flower infused green tea with rose petals, and our Moroccan Mint Green Tea blends sencha with refreshing mint.

Green tea leaves are heated soon after harvesting in a process that halts oxidation, helping them retain their green colour and fresh, delicate flavour. In Japan the leaves are typically steamed, as with our Sencha Green Tea, while in China they are more often pan-fired. The leaves are then rolled and dried.

Both come from the same plant, Camellia sinensis. The difference is oxidation. Green tea leaves are heated quickly after picking to stop the process, keeping the leaf green and the flavour fresh and grassy. Black tea leaves are left to oxidise fully, which darkens the leaf and creates deeper, maltier flavours. Green tea also retains more of its catechins and carries less caffeine.

Yes, but green tea naturally contains less caffeine than black tea or coffee. It offers a gentle energy boost without the crash, helped by L-theanine, which moderates how the caffeine is felt. If you would prefer no caffeine at all, browse our caffeine free herbal infusions.

No. All OM teas are certified organic, with no added flavours, colours or preservatives. Where a blend is naturally flavoured, that flavour comes from real botanicals in the blend, such as the jasmine and rose petals in our Jasmine Green Tea or the mint in our Moroccan Mint Green Tea, rather than from an added flavouring.

Green tea is often associated with weight management. Green tea is especially high in catechins, naturally occurring antioxidants that may support metabolism and fat oxidation, and research has linked regular green tea consumption with modest changes in weight and body fat. It is best thought of as one supportive habit alongside diet, movement and sleep rather than a solution in itself.

Green tea prefers cooler water than black tea. Boiling water scorches the leaf and draws out bitterness, so let the kettle stand for a minute or two before pouring. Use roughly one teaspoon per cup and steep briefly, following the time and temperature listed on each product page. Good quality green tea can be re-steeped, and a second infusion is often the sweeter one. A tea infuser or glass teapot gives the leaves room to open properly.

Yes you can. Many people enjoy it as part of a daily wellness ritual. We recommend moderate consumption based on your personal caffeine tolerance.

Mid-morning or early afternoon suits most people, as the caffeine gives a lift without carrying into the evening. Some find green tea sits better after food than on an empty stomach, and because tannins can reduce iron absorption it is worth leaving an hour between a cup and an iron-rich meal or supplement. For the evening, our herbal blends are caffeine free.

Yes, and it is one of the best ways to enjoy it in warm weather. Our Moroccan Mojito Iced Tea is a green tea base made for exactly this. You can also cold brew any of our green teas by steeping the leaf in cold water in the fridge for several hours, which produces a smoother, less astringent cup. Green tea contains caffeine, and intake is usually limited during pregnancy. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, please check with your healthcare professional about how much is appropriate for you. Organic Merchant also has a specific selection of pregnancy and nursing teas.

If you would like to taste green tea on its own, start with our Sencha Green Tea, with light grassy notes and a smooth, slightly sweet finish. If you prefer something more aromatic, our Jasmine Green Tea is floral and delicate, while our Moroccan Mint Green Tea is bright and refreshing.
