Considered a sacred plant, holy basil or tulsi, is a small shrub native to South East Asia.
Not to be confused with basil, the herb’s use in traditional medicine dates back thousands of years, as it was believed it had potent powers to flush out toxins from the body.
The flowers were used to treat respiratory conditions, while the leaves and seeds were used to treat malaria. Studies have shown it may be an effective treatment for diabetes, anxiety, heart disorders and stomach complaints.
It contains high levels of vitamins A and C, as well as calcium, zinc and iron.
