Star Anise (Illicium verum)

Star Anise is a spice made from the fruit of the Chinese evergreen tree. It’s aptly named for the star-shaped pods from which the spice seeds are harvested, and has a flavour reminiscent of liquorice.

Native to Southeast Asia and parts of China, it is used in cooking and for its many health benefits including high levels of antioxidants, as well as a significant amount of iron.

In traditional Chinese medicine, it is used to treat respiratory infections, nausea, constipation, and other digestive issues. It has also been found to contain powerful bioactive compounds that may help treat fungal, bacterial, and viral infections such as the common cold.
