Rooibos tea also called Red Bush is not actually a true tea and is made from the South African Cape fynbos plant, Aspalathus linearis. It is caffeine free, low in tannins and full of polyphenols. Rooibos tea is naturally sweet with floral, caramel, woody and honey overtones. It has been both consumed as a tea and also for medicinal purposes for generations in South Africa. Rooibos is known to help alleviate asthma, allergies, insomnia, skin disorders and colic. Recent studies also suggest that it helps prevent cardiovascular disease and lowers blood pressure. Drinking rooibos tea has been found to benefit the lipid and redox profiles of those at risk of cardiovascular disease. It is also rich in antioxidants, which protects cells against oxidative stress [1].
