Illustration of Mesquite

Mesquite (Prosopis)

The mesquite tree is native to South America and the United States. The trees pods are edible when harvested, and processed into a powder or flour.

It is a low glycemic sweetener that is high in protein. It is also rich in a number of vitamins, minerals and amino acids such as magnesium, iron, potassium, zinc and calcium which is good for healthy skin, hair and bones.

Mesquite has a high fibre and mineral content, anti-fungal properties and immune-boosting abilities. It promotes a smooth digestion and healthy gut flora as well as protects against degenerative diseases.

The low glycemic index means that it does not need insulin to be broken down, and won’t cause blood sugar spikes which may reduce the risk of diabetes.

Also a source of omega-3s, it is good for controlling inflammation.
