Previous to studying naturopathy and horticulture I did a few years of aromatherapy.
I continue to adore the romance and science behind aroma and witness its benefits daily.
For all you golden goddess, maidens and mothers alike this is one of my secret daily essentials. I concocted this body oil in the 7th month of my first pregnancy to nourish my skin, assist sleep and to bring about a more peaceful state (I found growing a baby to be totally surreal). I have applied it from top to toe before bed for nearly 3 years now, as I continued to apply post birth, throughout my second pregnancy, birth and beyond. Other than the intrinsic benefits of the essential oils. I find this ritual deeply nourishing, to connect with my body for a few minutes each day, because most days as a mummy of two energetic little souls and running OM that’s all I get! But the energy of those few moments is exponential. A little goes a long way.
As with everything, I recommend choosing certified organic essential oils and base oils. I have a range of oils from Mt Retour and Sydney essential oil co. Please feel free to share and mention other brands below in the comments.
Not all essential oils are safe during pregnancy, although many are, it is best to tend towards the gentler oils, spearmint in place of peppermint for example.
The following essential oils are some of the most delicate and nourishing at any stage of a woman’s life, including pregnancy.
The general rule of thumb for mixing body oil blends is maximum of 1 drop essential oil per millilitre of base oil. I have a very acute nose and I like to err on the side of cation especially during pregnancy, so I use half this ratio.
RECIPE: NOURISHING BODY OIL
Base: 100ml Organic Sesame oil and 100ml organic Almond oil
15 drops Mandarin
15 drop Grapefruit
15 drops Geranium
15 drops Ylang Ylang
15 drops Lavender
15 drops Rose (2 drops if using absolute)
15 drops Chamomile Roman absolute (2 drops if using absolute)
15 drops Jasmine (2 drops if using absolute)
105 drops total
The absolutes are very strong and expensive (up to $200 for 5ml) – typically you can purchase oils such as rose, jasmine and chamomile already diluted at about 3-5% in a carry oil such jojoba- makes dispensing easier and can generally dose the same way ( ie 15 drops in the case of this blend)
I apply to from the soles of my feet up to and including my face before bed each night.
A NOTE ON OILY BED SHEETS
And yes my white sheets get oily, but I just soak them every now and again with the other baby whites, and they come up perfect. Ecostore @ecostoreau and Earthwise @earthwisehq do a good natural powder for soaking whites.
