Why is it important to us that our herbal tea is organic?
At Organic Merchant we believe that organic consumables are not only better for people, but also for the planet, thus ensuring our part in maintaining and sustaining the world for the future.
A MEASURE OF PURITY
We believe that the earth’s flora and fauna deserves to live in simple purity. That its raw, wild, natural beauty is celebrated. Its purity is real, unaltered, without additives, without chemical intervention, irradiation, enhancement or genetic modification.
Our commitment to using 100% certified organic produce is a reflection of this, ensuring you are receiving the purest botanicals possible.
A WAY OF LIFE
Being a naturopath is not just our founder’s vocation but her way of living, a life philosophy, an oath to live with purity, mindfulness and in awareness with nature.
The biosphere in which we live is so magnificently complex and interwoven. To us living close to nature is just common sense.
AN ETHICAL & SUSTAINABLE CHOICE
It is our intention to live each day making choices and actions that demonstrate care, respect and compassion for our families, the broader community and the environment. In ecological terms sustainability is the capacity to endure; to remain diverse and productive. One could say that nature has successfully achieved both diversity and productive excellence, even against the greatest odds. It is therefore important to us that the business practices we employ each day at Organic Merchant are in unity with this philosophy and endorse sustainability.
Q&A with Chalimah Jeanne, the founder of Organic Merchant
Organic Merchant – OM tea – was created in 2011 by local Sydney naturopath and herbalist Chalimah Jeanne. It started out with 12 loose leaf infusions being sold at Paddington Markets on a Saturday and expanded to the range of over 35 certified organic teas that we see today.
The inspiration for developing a range of herbal tea grew over 20 years of study and clinical practice.
How did Organic Merchant’s loose leaf tea begin?
I (Chalimah Jeanne) started practicing as a Naturopath, Nutritionist and Herbalist in 2005. I worked in an integrative medical practice alongside some amazing doctors, nurses and other allied health practitioners where a majority of the patients I saw were being treated for complex conditions.
Blending therapeutic botanical infusions and herbal teas was a natural extension of my clinical practice. I originally created my first range of organic teas in support of their treatments.
I believe that simple daily pleasures such as consuming a pure cup of organic herbal tea can be one of the most nourishing practices, and that the everyday items that serve and nurture us are also a thing of beauty. With these mantras in mind, I created Organic Merchant as a way to share this experience of wellness.
This philosophy is what generated and continues to generate the momentum of Organic Merchant.
What is your favourite herbal tea and why?
At present I am drinking a lot of the Raspberry Leaf Tea and Mother Nurture teas as we have just welcomed our daughter Isolde into the world! I’m also drinking the Restful Tea to help calm and sooth my nervous system and assist with new mommy sleep deprivation.
Furthermore, I’m totally loving the Spicy Chai or the Outback Chai both amazing with milk/mylk and honey during the day. That and the Lemongrass and Ginger Tea, such a simple tea, but I find it so restorative. It’s great as a fuzzy iced tea.
To be honest I love all the herbal teas, and “favourite” depends on the moment I’m in. My personal tastes are quite wide and varied, but I lean toward the stronger flavours, tart sour blends, bitter sweet blends and also spicy teas.
Other than organic tea making, what are some of your passions and inspirations?
As a mother of two beautiful little souls, my passions have naturally changed from a personal focus. Previously I used to spend hours practicing yoga, meditation and chanting, as well as reading, researching and keeping abreast with the latest in alternative medicine.
With the birth of my son Gabriel, I stepped out of clinical practice to concentrate on the Organic Merchant herbal tea range, and as any new parent knows I have had a lot less time to devote to myself!
How do you make the perfect cup of loose leaf herbal tea?
The ‘perfect’ cup of tea is a moment in stillness.
The thoughtful selection, preparation of the teapot, the inhalation of the top notes as you pour over the freshly boiled water, the visual glory as tea infuses its natural colourful hue and life force into the water, the lesson in patience it takes to wait 5 minutes till properly brewed and the joy that first sip washes over you.
This being said my ‘perfect’ cup of tea has normally been sitting on the bench brewing for over an hour and has gone cold. We live in a modern world where perfect is living in the moment that life gives you and my lesson is learning the surrender to it. Lucky I designed all my loose leaf herbal teas to taste awesome both hot, cold and all the stages in between!
